The King Kohli was born on 5 November 1988. Kohli is an Indian cricketer who plays Test and ODI cricket for the Indian national team. Kohli plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian famous league Indian Premier League. Kohli represents Delhi in domestic cricket. He has also captained India to win the ICC Test mace three times in a row in 2017, 2018 and 2019. In 2013, he was ranked number one among ICC ODI batsmen. In 2018, Kohli was ranked the top player and became the only Indian cricketer to be ranked number one in all three formats of cricket.
He became the only player to score 20,000 runs in the decade, with which the International Cricket Council named him the Male Cricketer of the Decade in 2020. He is the player to receive 10 ICC awards, which is the most of any player in international cricket. Kohli won the ICC ODI Player of the Year award in 2012, 2017, 2018 and 2023. In 2018, he became the first cricketer to win the ICC ODI and Test Player of the Year awards in the same year. Virat was named Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World consecutively from 2016 to 2018. Kohli has the most and most ‘Player of the Match’ and ‘Player of the Series’ awards in all three fields of cricket. Kohli was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2013, the Padma Shri in 2017 and the Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honour, in 2018. Early life
Virat Kohli was born (1988) in Delhi. Kohli belongs to a Punjabi Hindu family. His father was Prem Nath Kohli who was a lawyer. And his mother Saroj Kohli is a housewife. He has an elder brother Vikas and an elder sister Bhavna. Kohli spent his childhood in Uttam Nagar. Kohli’s early education was done in Vishal Bharti Public School. Kohli was fond of cricket since childhood. At the age of three, Virat Kohli would pick up the bat and request his father to bowl.
West Delhi Cricket Academy (WDCA) was formed in 1998. In the same year, Kohli’s father encouraged Virat’s passion for cricket and introduced the nine-year-old Kohli to Rajkumar Sharma. Kohli’s father enrolled Virat in a professional cricket academy. At first, Kohli could not make it to the Under-14 Delhi team. Kohli eventually made his place in the Under-15 Delhi team. Kohli trained at the academy and also attended matches at the Sumeet Dogra Academy in Vasundhara Enclave. Prem Kohli died on 18 December 2006. Kohli has credited his father for taking him to practice every day. Kohli’s family lived in Meera Bagh until 2015, when they moved to Gurgaon.
Personal life
Kohli is married to Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma. Their association began in 2013. The two met when they were shooting for the promotion of Clear shampoo. The two got married on 11 December 2017 in an intimate ceremony held in Florence, Italy. The second child was born on 15 February 2024, who is named Akay.
Kohli believes in what people call superstitions. For this reason, Kohli wears a black wrist band. It is known as a talisman tradition in India. Due to these superstitions, Kohli has also started the ritual of constantly wearing white shoes on the cricket field. Kohli has tattoos of Lord Shiva, “Om”, the names of his parents, a tribal symbol, a calm monastery, a samurai warrior, a scorpion symbol and his ODI and Test match cap number on his body.
Commercial investments
Virat Kohli has invested in Indian Super League club FC Goa. Virat is a co-owner of it till 2024. This venture came as a future business opportunity for him. As he tried to bring more business to his portfolio after retiring from cricket. In November 2014, Virat Kohli partnered with Anjana Reddy’s Universal Sportsbiz (USPL) to launch the fashion brand WROGN. In late 2014, Kohli became a shareholder and brand ambassador of London-based social networking venture “Sport Convo”. In 2015, Kohli invested a sum of ₹90 crore to set up a chain of health clubs and fitness centers across India. Known as “Chisel”, this network of gyms was set up through a joint venture between Kohli, Chisel India and CSE. In September of the same year, Kohli added to his portfolio of sports-related investments by becoming a co-owner of the International Premier Tennis League franchise, UAE Royals. He also co-owns the JSW-owned Bengaluru Warriors franchise in the Pro Wrestling League.
In 2016, Kohli launched a new venture to promote child fitness. He launched Stepathlon Kids in collaboration with Stepathlon Lifestyle. It aimed to encourage youth to adopt healthy lifestyle habits and create awareness about physical activity.
In 2017, Kohli partnered with German sportswear brand, Puma, to launch his athletic lifestyle brand, One8. In 2017, Kohli also founded the eatery Nueva in New Delhi. The restaurant is inspired by South American and has a decor that offers a distinctive culinary setting with Native American artwork.
In 2022, Kohli and Anushka invested ₹2.5 crore in insurance-based startup Digit. Additionally, they have backed Blue Tribe, a startup that produces and distributes plant-based meat products.
Philanthropy
The “Virat Kohli Foundation” was established in 2013 with the aim of working for underprivileged children.
The foundation participated in a charity auction organised by eBay and Save the Children India in 2014 with the proceeds going towards education and healthcare for underprivileged children.
Kohli’s foundation organises several charity events to raise funds. The most prominent among these is football matches for Indian cricketers and Bollywood actors. The first such event was a celebrity football match organised in association with Abhishek Bachchan’s charity foundation. The event garnered media attention and was successful in raising funds.
Another charity football match was organised called the “Celebrity Clasico”. It was held in June 2016 in Mumbai.
The Virat Kohli Foundation partnered with the Smile Foundation in 2016 to promote the empowerment of underprivileged children and youth.
In 2017, Kohli launched the Athlete’s Foundation as a platform for the good nutrition and support of aspiring young athletes. Established the Athletic Development Program (ADP). This initiative will provide guidance to these young athletes in areas such as coaching, training, fitness, competition and nutrition and help promote their growth and development. This program has benefited many young athletes including tennis player Swastika Ghosh and golfer Adil Bedi.
